Tens of millions of Americans struggle to put healthy food_on the dinner table. For the 44_million people who rely on food stamps to buy groceries, fresh vegetables and fruits can be prohibitively expensive. Wholesome Wave ( wholesomewave.org) was founded in 2007 to give low-income consumers greater access to healthy produce. The organization’s Doubling SNAP program doubles the value of produce food stamps, working with farmers, farmers’ markets, grocery stores, and communitysupported agriculture programs across 47 states. The Pro duce Pre scrip tions program encourages doctors to write innovative prescriptions for fruits and vegetables; shoppers can bring the prescriptions to participating markets. In 2016, Whole some Wave helped more than 500,000 lowerincome shoppers purchase $10.6_million worth of healthy produce.
