Charity of the week
More than 65 million people around the world are currently displaced—having been forced to flee their homes because of war, persecution, famine, or a natural disaster. Since 1979, the American Refugee Committee (arcrelief.org) has been working with this vulnerable global population by providing health services, education, and camp management. ARC specializes in building tents, semi-permanent housing, clean-water taps, toilets, showers, and cooking areas for those living in refugee camps. More than 2,000 staff members are stationed in refugee camps worldwide, delivering primary health services, medicine, vaccines, and prenatal and postpartum care. The organization also provides informal education, mentorship, and vocational training for refugees and youth living in Pakistan and Jordan. Every year, ARC assists 3 million refugees throughout Africa and Asia.
Each charity we feature has earned a four-star overall rating from Charity Navigator, which rates not-for-profit organizations on the strength of their finances, their governance practices, and the transparency of their operations. Four stars is the group’s highest rating. ■
