Wine: Reds under $20
Everyone could always use a longer list of good $20 wines, said Eric Asimov in The New York Times. Wines at half that price will be boring, even if drinkable, but in the $15 to $25 range, “the level of interest and pleasure in the wines increases exponentially.” Below: three domestic reds that are excellent values.
2016 Matthiasson California Tendu Red ($20). Sold in fat 1-liter bottles, this Italian-style blend of barbera, montepulciano, and aglianico is so tasty and so low in alcohol, “you’ll want to gulp it down.”
2014 Broadside Paso Robles Margarita Vineyard Merlot ($18). “While insipid or pretentious merlot abounds, this one is fresh and plummy, well-balanced and lip-smacking, with a pleasant bitterness to invite the next sip.”
Shinn Estate Red Table Wine ($14). Produced by an excellent Long Island, N.Y., vineyard, this “spicy, brambly” merlot–cabernet franc blend is also reliably delicious. ■
