Subaru’s WRX STI Type RA

Here’s one for the fanatics. Two decades after its four-door, all-wheel-drive rally car arrived in the U.S. and began building a rabid following, Subaru has rolled out a “crazy tossable” performance version that will be sold to only 500 buyers. Based on a custom model that set a racetrack record for four-door sedans, the new WRX STI Type RA is barely more powerful than a standard STI, but it easily outraces the cheaper car. “If you have $50K and a hankering for a rally hammer, act fast.”
“The single most noticeable improvement is the steering,” which we credit to the sport-tuned Bilstein dampers. But subtle improvements in aerodynamics, center of gravity, engine durability, and gearing make the “already great” 2018 STI “much, much better.” The RA’s only real flaw is that its price is hard to justify when Honda’s Civic Type R costs $15,000 less and offers even better steering and handling.
Subaru diehards will care only about how the Type RA compares with the STI, and those who upgrade “can rest confident in the fact they will own the best-driving WRX STI ever offered from the factory.” Truly an impressive upgrade over the standard model, it’s also “a ridiculously fun car in its own right.” ■
