Charity of the week
Founded in 1985, the National Ability Center (discovernac.org) aims to empower and challenge individuals with disabilities through sports programming designed to fit their needs. The charity offers recreational camps year-round for all skill levels, with tailored programs for veterans, as well as families and individuals with autism, physical disabilities, and visual impairments. NAC’s instructors help participants use adaptive sports equipment and learn techniques to ski, swim, rock climb, and cycle, and offer scholarships for those in need of financial assistance. NAC also offers training for athletes interested in competing at the Paralympics. The organization has established sustainable adaptive recreational programs worldwide, partnering with the State Department to train coaches in Thailand, Spain, and Mexico.
Each charity we feature has earned a four-star overall rating from Charity Navigator, which rates not-for-profit organizations on the strength of their finances, their governance practices, and the transparency of their operations. Four stars is the group’s highest rating. ■
