Charity of the week
The burning of fossil fuels since the Industrial Revolution has caused ocean acidity to increase 30 percent, affecting marine life and the communities that depend on it. The mission of The Ocean Foundation (oceanfdn.org) is to reverse this destructive trend. Through its various initiatives, the foundation works to reduce ocean acidity by monitoring sea pH levels, mobilizing community stakeholders, and crafting legislation with policymakers that would reduce CO2 pollution and restore balance to the oceans. The charity also supports targeted groups that are working to protect coral reefs, coasts, beaches, and ocean habitats worldwide. Since 2001, the foundation has invested $44 million to protect species of concern, conserve marine habitats, increase ocean literacy, and build the capacity of people fighting for ocean conservancy.
Each charity we feature has earned a four-star overall rating from Charity Navigator, which rates not-for-profit organizations on the strength of their finances, their governance practices, and the transparency of their operations. Four stars is the group’s highest rating. ■
